Air conditioning in Bexley, sized for each room

Apex fits and services air conditioning in Bexley, three miles from our Dartford base. We work on the cottages and terraces around Old Bexley, the family houses on the roads beyond, and the shops on the High Street. The survey is free, the quote is fixed and written, and Olly does the fitting.

Sizing air con for a Bexley bedroom and living room

A recent Bexley job shows why each room gets its own size of unit. We fitted two Panasonic wall units: a 2.5kW in the bedroom and a 5kW in the living room.

The bedroom is small and only needs gentle cooling at night, so a small unit can tick over quietly on a low fan speed. The living room is larger, catches more sun and holds more people, so it needs twice the output.

We work out every room from a heat-gain calculation: floor area, the size and direction of the windows, insulation and how the room is used. An oversized unit keeps switching on and off and wastes power. An undersized one runs flat out on hot afternoons and still struggles.

Two rooms like these can share one outdoor unit as a multi-split, or have one outdoor unit each if wall space allows. A loft conversion or home office gets the same room-by-room treatment. Read more about how we install air con.

Bexley Council planning and the Old Bexley conservation area

Old Bexley is a conservation area, and the Parkhurst and North Cray Village conservation areas are close by. In these streets, an outdoor unit on the front of a house or on a wall facing the road usually needs planning permission from Bexley Council.

On a back wall or in the garden it is normally permitted development, provided the system heats as well as cools and passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at the neighbour's nearest window.

The older cottages and terraces around the village usually have a back wall that works well, with a short pipe run straight through into the room. Flats are a different case: planning permission is usually needed, plus the freeholder's consent.

A listed building needs listed building consent. Our planning permission guide sets out the rules in full, and Olly checks them against your address before you commit.

Not sure which unit suits your Bexley home? A couple of photos usually settles it.

Olly and Andy came to install Mitsubishi HI a 7kw and a 12kw multi-split units. Not a small job as we had 7 indoor units to hang and lots of awkward trunking /pipe runs in eves and suffixes. All in all, a very friendly and professionally installation. I am especially impressed with Olly who is very careful with the work and has a keen eye for detail - a part I highly recommend. Olly and Andy came with shoe protectors, dust sheets and mobile vacuums, keeping all things tidy and clean at all times. Not pushy and very accomodating with all our requirements. Highly recommended!

Air con for shops and offices on Bexley High Street

For a shop or office on the High Street, the outdoor unit goes in the rear yard or on a flat roof at the back, so nothing is fixed to the shopfront. Business premises do not get householder permitted development, so expect a planning application, and we build that into the timetable from the start.

Inside, a slim wall unit or a ceiling cassette keeps the shop floor and display walls clear. See air conditioning for businesses for offices, salons and cafés.

Olly and his colleague have installed an air conditioner in my bedroom last month. They have been very polite and professional. Olly has answered all of my questions and provided multiple quotes. I was worried that the outside unit of the AC system would be loud, however it turned out to be surprisingly quiet. I'm very pleased with that. The AC system works well and cools the room very quickly, I have had no issues with it.

Questions

Air conditioning in Bexley: questions

Does Bexley Council need to approve air conditioning?

Not always. A heat-and-cool unit on the back of a house is usually permitted development in England, so no application is needed. Bexley Council approval is usually needed if the house is in Old Bexley or another conservation area and the unit would face the road, if you live in a flat, or if the unit serves a shop or office.

Does air con bring fresh air into the room?

No. A split system moves heat, not outside air. The indoor unit draws in room air, passes it over a cooled or warmed coil, filters it and blows it back out. Only refrigerant pipes, a cable and a drain link it to the outdoor unit. For fresh air you still need a window or a ventilation system, and clean filters keep the room air fresher.

How much does air conditioning installation cost in Bexley?

There is no set price. Room count, unit size, how far the pipes run and the state of the electrics all move it. A bedroom and living room pair, like our recent Bexley job, costs more than a single room but is fitted as one job. Send a photo on WhatsApp, and Olly will survey for free and give you a fixed written quote.

Do you cover Bexleyheath and North Cray?

Yes. From Dartford we cover Bexley, Bexleyheath, North Cray, Albany Park, Blackfen and Crayford. In Bexleyheath we fitted Mitsubishi Heavy Industries multi-splits serving seven indoor units, and the customer wrote that Olly "is very careful with the work and has a keen eye for detail".
