Air conditioning in Royal Tunbridge Wells

Air conditioning in Royal Tunbridge Wells

Apex installs and services air conditioning across Royal Tunbridge Wells and its suburbs, about 22 miles from our Dartford base. We have fitted systems in the town, and a local customer's review is below. Period houses, flats and town-centre shops each need a different plan, which Olly sets out in a fixed written quote.

A recent Tunbridge Wells install

One of our jobs in the town shows how much the details matter. We fitted a Panasonic floor-mounted system with Wi-Fi control and ran the pipework under the decking, so the balcony outside stayed clear.

A floor unit sits low on the wall where a radiator might go, which suits rooms with tall windows and little wall space higher up, as some of the town's period rooms have. Wi-Fi control means the system can be switched on from a phone before you get home, which helps in a room that faces the afternoon sun.

A Tunbridge Wells customer's review follows, word for word. If you are weighing up which indoor unit suits your room, our air conditioning installation page explains the systems we fit.

Flats in converted period houses

Many of the large Victorian houses in Tunbridge Wells are now flats. That adds two steps: the freeholder's consent for anything fixed to the outside, and a planning check, because flats get tighter permitted development limits than houses.

Tall period floors also mean long pipe runs, so we plan a route through cupboards or voids rather than down the front of the building. The outdoor unit usually goes on a rear wall, in a back garden or on a flat roof. Our guide to air con in a flat covers the consent side.

Restaurants, cafés and shops in the town centre

Restaurants and cafés in the centre need dining rooms that stay comfortable on warm evenings, and shops need steady temperatures for staff and stock. Commercial outdoor units normally need planning permission and go in rear yards or on flat roofs.

Most buildings on The Pantiles are listed, so listed building consent is needed there as well, and the unit has to be out of sight. We fit and look after air conditioning for businesses, including servicing that keeps F-gas records in order.

Southborough, Pembury, Rusthall and the suburbs

Away from the centre, houses in High Brooms, Hawkenbury, Rusthall and Southborough are usually simpler: a garden or rear wall for the outdoor unit and a short pipe run indoors. We also cover Pembury, Langton Green and Speldhurst.

The countryside around the town is in the High Weald National Landscape, so for rural addresses we check the siting rules with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council before quoting. If your house is semi-detached or terraced, permitted development allows one outdoor unit, so a multi-split is the usual way to cool several rooms from it.

Questions

Air conditioning in Royal Tunbridge Wells: questions

Can I put an outdoor unit on a building on The Pantiles?

Not on the front. Most Pantiles buildings are listed, so you need listed building consent, and the outdoor unit has to go out of sight, usually in a rear yard or on a back roof. Indoor units can often go in with little change to the building. We tell you at the survey what consent is likely to be needed and what the council will want to see.

Can the pipework be hidden on a Tunbridge Wells period house?

Usually, yes. Inside, we run pipes through cupboards, floor voids or a loft rather than across walls. Outside, we keep the run short and at the back, or hide it, as we did on a Tunbridge Wells job where the pipework went under the decking to keep a balcony clear. Olly shows you the planned route at the survey.

Do restaurants in Tunbridge Wells need planning permission for air conditioning?

Usually, yes. Permitted development for heat-and-cool units only covers homes, so the outdoor unit on a restaurant, café or shop normally needs planning permission from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, plus listed building consent on a listed building. We advise on a position that is out of sight and quiet for neighbours, which helps the application.

Do you cover Southborough, Rusthall and Pembury?

Yes. We cover Southborough, Rusthall, Pembury, Langton Green, Speldhurst and High Brooms as well as the town itself. Surveys are booked on a set day that suits you. The planning check, the noise calculation and the fixed written quote are the same wherever in the borough you live.
