Old Oxted and New Oxted need different approaches
In Old Oxted some buildings date from the 15th and 16th centuries, are often listed and have timber frames that need careful handling. A pipe route there is planned to avoid cutting through historic timbers, and the outdoor unit goes at the back, out of view.

Does air con bring in fresh air?
For a flat above a shop in New Oxted, where an open window lets in street noise, it helps to know what air con can and cannot do. A wall-mounted split does not bring outside air in.
It draws air from the room, passes it through a filter and over a cold or warm coil, and sends it back. So it cools, heats and catches dust, but it is not ventilation: trickle vents or an open window still provide fresh air.
What makes the biggest difference to the air you breathe is keeping the system clean. A dirty filter or coil can blow dust and stale smells back into the room, so an annual service and deep clean is worth more than most people expect.

Is air con fresh air?
No. A split air conditioner recirculates the air already in the room, filtering it and cooling or heating it, but it does not draw air in from outside. You still need trickle vents, an extractor or an open window for fresh air. In an Oxted flat by a busy street, air con lets you keep the window shut on hot days, with a vent open for ventilation.
Can air conditioning cause breathing problems?
A clean, well-maintained system should not. Problems tend to come from neglect: a clogged filter or a dirty coil can circulate dust and smells around the room. Washing the filters every few weeks in summer and booking an annual service is the main answer. If you have asthma or another breathing condition, ask your GP for advice on your own situation.
